The laboratory of "Gene Regulation in the Immune system" has been founded in December 2007 when Dr Spilianakis accepted a position of an Assistant Research Professor at the Institute of Molecular Biology & Biotechnology (IMBB) of the Foundation for Research &Technology (FORTH) after a postdoc in the laboratory of Dr Richard Flavell at the Section of Immunobiology at Yale University. Since September 2009 Dr Spilianakis was appointed as an Assistant Professor of Biochemistry at the Department of Biology of the University of Crete. Research in our laboratory focuses on the effect of the three dimensional structure of the cell nucleus on gene transcription in the immune system.
Our laboratory is housed at the IMBB-FORTH and is part of the Research Group "Gene Expression in Mammalian systems". Head of the team is Dr C.Spilianakis who is leading a group of scientists comprised by the research assistant Manouela Kapsetaki, three PhD students (Deligianni Chryssa, Stratigi Callina and Tzerpos Petros), graduate-rotator students and undergraduate diploma thesis students.
Our undergaduate students are recruited from the Department of Biology of the University of Crete and the graduate students are recruited from two graduate programms:"Molecular Biology Biomedicine" and "Molecular Basis of Human Disease".
